I have a chance to upgrade to a 2005 Accord that is now in possession of our family but I'm simply not sure about whether or not to take it, for many reasons that I'll go into after the jump.
The story behind the car is a complicated and private family matter, so I won't go into detail, but basically I have an estranged older brother who is dumping the car on my Mom because she co-signed the loan and he can't afford the payment.
The payment in question is $269.26 per month for 45 months. There's 33 months left on the loan, so if I take ownership I'm investing $8,885.58 into the car.
Now, as for the car, it's a near-base LX model. It's the 2.4 I4 with 85k on the odometer, and has power windows, sunroof, and a CD changer. That's about it for options. It doesn't even have alloys or driving lights.
Overall it's in much better shape than my Neon, it rides much nicer and has no cosmetic issues interior or exterior.
It is a manual, but it is possibly the worst MTX I've ever experienced. It won't slide into gear, the shifter catches halfway through and you have to give it an extra shove, and you can't feel anything through it. The car is also very boring to drive, roads that are usually a blast-and-a-half in my Neon don't elicit any excitement from me in this car.
The car also smells of pot and cigarettes and will have to be professionally detailed to get rid of the stench.
So here's the question, Oppo. Should I commit to three years and almost nine thousand dollars of payments into a car that I don't particularly like, simply because it's slightly nicer than my current car?

I'd say don't, keep the Neon. It's way too much for a nearly 10 year old Accord that smells like pot.

I say no. No offense to your brother but if he smokes in it and can't afford the payment logic tells me he probably didn't treat it well.

Hell no. You can buy lots of nicer cars for $9,000 and the only thing that sucks more than driving a car you hate is having to pay money for the privilege.
It sounds like something's up with the gearbox because that is very un-Honda like.

I live in an area with extremely inflated auto values. You will never, ever find a running car in the local paper/craigslist for under $1,000.

No, don't do it. I do feel terrible for your mom however, I've been in the cosigner position before and it sucks.

It's under some sort of warranty, I just don't know the details of it because I can't find the relevant paperwork.

Didn't even need to read the whole thing to say: No.
$9k for something you don't particularly like is out of the question. And just because, my $9k car that I do like.

If that's the case, find out if a dealer will buy it. 85k on the clock? Decent mechanical condition? There's sprays to knock the stench out that don't cost anywhere near $8k. You may be able to turn it into a slight profit by selling it do a dealer to pay off the loan in full, and take the leftovers to work on your own car.
$9k is just too much for what it is, especially if those are payments. If you could afford that upfront and needed a long term reliable car, then I would say it's reasonable (not great, just reasonable). Payments on a used car like that are so far beyond me.
You have a car, it's not a bad car, and it's not on it's last legs. You're not upgrading by taking on a loan like that. It's a Honda.

This doesn't seem like a good deal for you...if you saw this thing, for that money, advertised in CL, you'd probably pass it by. If you're going to upgrade, get something you'll enjoy! It doesn't have to be expensive.

I like what JGabrow said. At the very least you could get your Mom out from under the shitty situation.

Never Never Never buy a car you don't WANT. For $9k you could get something you'll love.

The Accord is in possesion of your family? Damn, SkyNet's take-over has begun; burn all the Accords!
I would not enter into that venture. I would try to find some other way to offload the vehicle. Besides, 2002 Accords are so much prettier, especially as coupes:
